Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating is a psychological disorder characterized by episodes of eating excessive amounts of food in one sitting, even when the person is not physically hungry. The binges are often used as a way to escape reality, make the person feel temporarily happy and forget their problems for a short period of time. They are followed by feelings of guilt, shame and disgust. Unlike Bulimia, the binges are not followed by any attempt to get rid of the food, such as vomiting or laxative use. Someone with a binge eating disorder will feel they can not control this eating behaviour. During a binge episode, they will eat faster than usual and will often eat in secret due to being ashamed of their behaviour.
Research shows that binge eating disorders effect both men and women equally. It commonly develops in the late teens and early 20’s. Although there is no particular cause, risk factors for developing a binge eating disorder include being overweight as a child, obesity, a history of fad dieting, depression, anxiety and low self esteem.
Being a psychological condition, it is important to address the underlying issues potentially causing the condition with a psychologist who has experience dealing with eating disorders. A dietitian will be extremely important in helping the individual follow a healthy diet and and keep to a food routine every day. With support this can minimize the urge to binge.
