BULIMIA NERVOSA
Bulimia Nervosa is characterised by the consumption of large amounts of food, which is usually followed by self-induced vomiting, laxatives or diuretic misuse.
Binge eating or bulimia can be a symptom of Anorexia Nervosa but not all people with Bulimia have been through a period of excessive weight loss. Normal weight Bulimia Nervosa is common and distressing illness. Patients with Bulimia Nervosa have usually been excessively concerned about their weight and practice restrained eating over a long period of time. The symptoms are gorging followed by self induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives and or diuretics, preoccupation with body shape and weight, depressed mood, episodes of rigid dieting, excessive exercise.
Signs of bulimia nervosa are depressive moods, weight fluctuations, pre occupation with food, kilojoules and weight. They will eat only a small amount in public, may have bathroom visits after meals, have increasing criticisms of their body, weight loss is a major priority in life despite often being over weight.
