Weighing Up During Winter
As winter rolls in this year, don't let your rolls come back with it! Make the decision now to keep your healthy weight and continue working to attain this goal. Weight loss and weight maintenance are certainly not as easy in winter as they are in summer. Warm comfort foods bring added calories, and wet weather deters calorie burning exercise. So what can you do to maintain your weight this winter?
Hit the gym. With the large number of gyms opening these days membership prices are getting competitive. Shop around and see who can give you a good deal for the winter months.
Say yes to soup. Many soups are nutrient packed and low in calories. Make your own or experiment with the abundance of canned varieties. Choose vegetable based soups and avoid creamy options. Try and avoid the bread roll with butter, but if you need a carbohydrate fix with it, use one slice of bread or a small dinner roll, no butter of course!
Don’t forget fruit. Fruit is the best snack, especially in the summer, but winter fruit can be tasty too. Try baking your pears and apples and adding a dollop of low fat vanilla yoghurt for a sweet snack. Tinned pears and peaches can also be warmed in the microwave.
Hot chocolate cravings. As tasty as it is, hot chocolate is a diet killer. Stick to tea and coffee with skim milk at work, and if you need a sweet treat now and then, look for the low fat, low sugar hot chocolate varieties in your supermarket. Make them with water, and add a little skim milk.
Casser ‘no’ roles. Casseroles are great winter meals that can be packed with lean meat and vegetables. Pull out your old casserole dishes, or check out the supermarket isles for casserole flavour sachets that just require you to add vegetables and meat. Avoid over doing the potatoes by choosing a variety of winter vegetables such as carrots, turnips, celery, leek etc. Casseroles are great as leftovers for lunch at work the next day.
