A Lighter Way to Celebrate Easter
Easter is known as a time to indulge in some chocolate, bake some scrumptious desserts and pretty much just over indulge for the entire four day weekend. Treating yourself to a few goodies to celebrate the holiday is certainly fine; however there are ways to make Easter celebrations lighter and healthier.
Be creative in the kitchen. When we think Easter, we automatically think chocolate. But look outside the box and think of other ingredients that embody the Easter spirit.
The Easter bunny eats carrots, so try incorporating carrots and the colour orange in your Easter meals and treats. Try some healthy baking recipes that include carrots, oranges or pumpkin, such as the Carrot and Sunflower Seed Muffin recipe here .
Eggs are the main event over Easter, but they do not have to be of the chocolate kind. Real eggs can be cooked into many types of dishes. Devilled eggs in particular are a lot of fun, as they still look like an egg in shape, and can be filled with colourful ingredients. They look great as party finger food. Traditionally, many people do not eat meat on Good Friday. Even if you do not follow this tradition, make it an excuse to try a healthy fish or seafood dish. Most fish and seafood is generally low fat, and those that are oily contain more healthy fats. It is great for heart health to include at least one serve of oily fish per week, and if you are not already doing so, Good Friday is a great time to start.
