Smith’s ‘Popped’ Potato Chips
Smith’s new ‘Popped’ Potato Chips are made using a technique that cooks the chips in air, rather than oil, cutting the fat content by 50% compared to regular potato chips. ‘Popped’ Potato Chips are then seasoned with canola oil, which accounts for their very low saturated fat content.
The table below compares ‘Popped’ Potato Chips with a number of other potato chip options. Although the kilojoule/calorie, carbohydrate, sugar and sodium contents are in line with the other options, the total fat and saturated fat is considerably lower. This certainly makes them a better option for the weight conscious and those who are particularly concerned with saturated fat intake.
It is interesting to note from the table that Smith’s 75% Less Saturated Fat potato chips actually contain more fat and saturated fat than Smith’s very own Extra Crunchy potato chip. They do however contain much less saturated fat than the Samboy potato chip variety.
Overall, it is potato chips you are longing for, the new Smith’s Popped range is definitely the healthier choice. However, 100g of potato chips will not do much to fill a stomach or take the edge off a craving, and the kilojoule/calorie and fat cost are still quite considerable. Keep them as a ‘sometimes’ snack only.
