Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is an herbal preparation made from the inner bark of an elm tree. Slippery elm contains a substance called mucilage, and when mixed with water, it creates a gel like substance. When taken orally, this gel is thought to coat the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and produce soothing qualities. In addition, slippery elm helps to increase mucous secretions in the intestines and contains antioxidants, both of which are beneficial to an inflamed and sensitive bowel.
Although there had been little scientific evidence to back up the claims surrounding slippery elm, it is said that it can be useful for conditions such as Gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Slippery elm acts like a soft fibre, as it softens and adds bulk to stools thus it is also said to help stop symptoms of diarrhoea and constipation.
Slippery elm can be taken in capsule, powder or liquid form. There are no documented serious side effects however it may slow down the absorption rate of other medications. Overall it appears to be a safe herbal remedy in that it helps to ease distress of inflammatory bowel issues.
