The Atkins diet products have arrived in Perth and the most interesting thing about these is their price. The Atkins Advantage Chocolate Decadence bars are approximately $4.49 per 60g bar. In comparison, 60g of dairy milk chocolate costs around $1.20.
The ready-to-drink Strawberry Shake is $4.25 each for 330mL, whereas a 300ml carton of Browne's Berry Chill costs $1.30.
A pack of 5 breakfast bars (each weighing only 37g) costs $11.95, whilst a box of 6 muesli bars (Uncle Toby's choc chip) costs $3.49.
Atkins have also brought out cereals, tomato sauce, pancake mix, muffin mix, pancake syrup, toning protein powder and protein bars among other items. Surely the cost of eating a number of these would throw any budget into chaos.
Nutritionally the difference between the chocolate bars is that the Atkins bar is lower in kilojoules, fat and carbohydrates than the dairy milk chocolate. However, it is very expensive and the flavour isn't a high quality chocolate or interesting.
The Atkins breakfast bars are higher in fat and kilojoules and lower in carbohydrates than the K-time bars. The lesser carbohydrates are due to the use of artificial sweeteners. The K-time bars are again much cheaper and a lot more satisfying.
The milkshakes taste similar but the Atkins product has almost 3 times the kilojoules, four times the fat content and half the carbohydrates of the Browne's product. For the difference in price and kilojoules I would see the Browne's Chill as the better choice.
