Arnotts™ Snack Right™ Fruit Slice
These biscuits claim to be 97% fat free and a good source of fibre. Both of these claims are correct, as seen in the nutrition information table. These biscuits also have a
Low Glycaemic Index, meaning they provide a source of sustained energy. People with diabetes must take care when interpreting this claim, because
Low Glycaemic Index could also be taken to mean that these biscuits will not produce high rises in blood sugar. This really depends upon the number of biscuits consumed at one time, or in other words, the quantity of carbohydrate consumed at one time. When one observes the sugar content of these biscuits, it appears very high, that is, 43.4 grams per 100 grams. The symbol + indicates that 52.5% of this sugar is from fruit. Therefore, we can calculate that this product contains 20.6 grams of sugar (other than fruit sugar) per 100 grams. Most dietitians would consider this to be too high for people with diabetes. One could also judge whether a product is too high in sugar by looking at the list of ingredients. In this case, fruit is listed first followed by sugar, glycerine (sugar) and glucose (sugar). Sugar and golden syrup are also mentioned again further down the ingredient list. This is yet another example of a low fat product that is too high in added sugar. However, this product is quite good in comparison to other sweet biscuits on the market as they are low in fat and contain a reasonable amount of fibre. Because they are high in sugar, people with diabetes or those attempting to lose weight should consider this product something to be consumed in small amounts occasionally.
