Different Types of Stones
Gallstones
Gallstones are often associated with a high fat diet and obesity. Maintaining a healthy diet and an ideal weight will help to protect against gallstones and the necessity of an operation. When gallstones are present a strict low fat diet can help alleviate pain. If you do develop stones, and need then surgically removed, you may find it difficult to consume high fat meals for a short time after. Discussing this with your dietitian is important, as well as discussing some dietary changes that will help prevent further stones in the future. See an APD dietitian for further help.
Kidneystones
An inadequate fluid intake in hot climates can lead to dehydration and the formation of kidney stones. Urine should always be clear and not strong. Care should be taken when working or playing outside in high temperatures. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day and more if you are sweating. Sometimes Calcium and other dietary restrictions are necessary. It is wise to see a specialist and APD dietitian for additional help.
