Anaemia : Vitamin B12 Anaemia

Vitamin B 12 deficiency leading to anaemia may be caused by inadequate diet, poor absorption or a lack of the intrinsic factor that is produced by the stomach. Age sometimes reduces the absorption of B 12. Vegetarians must be particularly careful in order to have adequate sources. Choose a vitamin B enriched soymilk.

Recommended Daily Intake in micrograms (µg)

  • Infants 0.3 µg
  • Children 0.9 - 2 µg
  • Adult Women 2 µg
  • Pregnancy 3 µg
  • Lactation 2.5 µg
  • Adult Men 2 µg

Sources of B12

Vitamin B 12 is only available from animal sources. The best sources are liver, kidney, red meat, oysters, tuna and egg yolks. There is none in breads, cereals, beans, lentils, fruit and vegetables.
