FOD MAP HYPOTHESIS
The FODMAP is a hypothesis, put forward by an Australian Professor – Prof. Gibson. It is particularly relevant for people with bloating and symptoms of irritable bowel. It may also assist with the treatment of Crohn's Disease.
• FODMAP stands for: Fermentable Oligo- Di- Monosaccharides And Polyols. This fermentation increases the water content in the gut and producing excess gas, wind, sometimes pain, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation.
Professor Gibson says the low FODMAP diet is very good at releaving symptoms but must be followed in its entirety under the direction of a dietitian.
Dietary Sources of FODMAPs
- Fructose – fruits, honey, high fructose corn syrup
- Fructans – (FOS) – wheat, onions
- Lactose – milk, yoghurt, ice cream
- Polyols – sorbitol, xylotol etc. – apples, pears, plums, reduced calorie sweeteners
- Galactooligosaccharides – raffinose, stachyose – legumes, beans, cabbage, brussel sprouts.
A dietitian can help in determining if this is a factor and help set up a balanced diet while still omitting offending foods. Often after a period of time only some foods will need to be omitted. Everyone is an individual and it is important to still have a balanced diet.
Seek the help of a dietitian to do this properly and improve your health and symptoms. There is also a cookbook available from the Perth Diet Clinic "Low FODMAPs " that is very supportive with interesting every day recipes.
