What is Diabetes?
The body does not efficiently use the energy from carbohydrates (sugar and starches) because the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that converts carbohydrate to the energy we need for daily living. An estimated 650,000 Australians have diabetes. Of these, 350,000 know they have diabetes and another 300,000 remain undiagnosed. A further significant number are in danger of developing diabetes, particularly those who have a family history of diabetes, are older and overweight.
It is imortant with diabetes to understand and follow a controlled carbohyrdate diet. Everyone with diabetes should see a dietitian and make sure they have the tools and understanding to keep excellent control of their blood sugars.
